About us
The story began in early childhood, and it has always lived in my soul — waiting only for the right moment to come into the light.
Made with Love Romania grew out of what defines me: my origins, my mother's, my grandmother's, my great-grandmother's. I was born in southern Oltenia, and until I was seven, I grew up in my grandparents' house. Every summer, my grandmother dyed wool in beautiful colors, and every winter she wove stories with those dream-like colors.
At my parents' house, every year before Easter, we would take the rugs and woven blankets outside to air — what we locally call scoarțe and velințe — hanging them on wire lines and fences. Every time, I marveled at how faithfully the tulips, poppies and roses were rendered, and how beautifully the colors were woven together.
No one has woven rugs here in more than twenty years. Many households modernized — a good thing, in many ways — but some velințe and chilims didn't survive that modernization. Others were destroyed by moths, or simply by time. Together with my family, we now rescue old rugs and bedspreads, most of them from Oltenia, where the majority of our family is from, but also from other regions of the country with a weaving tradition. We clean them, repair them where needed, and try to find them a place of honor in the homes of people who truly appreciate them — in Romania or abroad.
That's where the name comes from: it's a story about us, one we want to tell to anyone willing to listen. 🙂 And maybe, one day, we'll bring the old loom down from the attic and start weaving stories in color again.
Every rug and velință is one of a kind, handwoven from wool yarn on a cotton warp. Some are more than 100 years old. If you decide to bring one into your home, you'll be bringing home a woven story — a piece of the history and skill of the women of Romania's villages.
