Antique Bessarabian Kilim Rug – Dogs & Woman on Horseback, Floral Border on Black
A rare figurative Bessarabian kilim, hand-woven in wool in the slit-tapestry technique. Four large dogs, arranged in two mirrored pairs on the left and right, flank a central scene of a woman on horseback in a red-and-white outfit, with a butterfly hovering above. The scene is set in a soft pastoral landscape in sage, mustard and powder-blue tones, all framed by a classic border of flowers and leaves on a deep black-brown ground.
Unlike the more common all-over floral Bessarabian kilims, this piece carries a narrative scene, which makes it a true conversation piece for a wall, a console or a bold floor setting. The stepped, pixel-like contours of the animals and the rider are the signature of slit-tapestry weaving and give the piece its charming, folk-art character.
