Rare Antique Bukovina Wool Rug, Hand-Woven Flatweave with Raised Pattern, Dark Red, Early 20th Century, 315 x 165 cm
Non esistono due pezzi uguali — ognuno porta la mano di chi lo ha realizzato.
A rare, genuinely antique Bukovina rug, hand-woven entirely from wool in the early 20th century — more than 100 years old, one of a kind, and very hard to find today.
Woven by hand in Bukovina, northern Romania, at the beginning of the last century, this large rug comes from the golden age of Romanian rural weaving, when pieces like this were made in village households on wooden looms. Rugs of this age and size rarely survive.
The ground is a deep, dark red. The pattern is worked in the flatweave technique and stands slightly raised against the background, in a range of different colours. Because the wool is hand-dyed and a century old, the red shows subtle depth and variation — in some photos it can look a little lighter than it really is, depending on the light. The tactile, relief-like texture of the design is a hallmark of true hand weaving that no machine-made rug can imitate.
The woven motifs
What makes this rug truly special is its rich, complex, almost storytelling design. Rather than a simple repeating pattern, the weaver filled the surface with a wide variety of small figures and symbols, each one built stitch by stitch: human figures, horses, butterflies and hearts, together with many other folk motifs arranged across the field. These details are best appreciated up close — please see the detail photos, where you can discover the figures one by one. Such lively, figurative compositions are much rarer than the usual geometric or floral Bukovina designs, and reflect the imagination and personal touch of the woman who wove it.

Why it is special
Antique Bukovina rugs are scarce: most were worn out through daily use over the decades, and few have come down to us with their colours and structure still so intact. With its unusual figurative motifs, this is a true collector's piece and a meaningful long-term investment for anyone who loves authentic folk art and textile heritage.
How to use it
Because of its age and its relatively thin weave, we recommend displaying it on a wall as a tapestry, where its motifs can be admired in full, or using it on the floor only in low-traffic areas such as a bedroom, reading corner or beside a sofa. It is not suited to heavy foot traffic. Its rich, warm colours suit rustic, bohemian, traditional and eclectic interiors, and add real character and depth to a modern space.
Care
Vacuum gently or have it dry cleaned; avoid vigorous rubbing. Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight and moisture. If hung, distribute the weight along the full width of the top edge.
As a hand-woven piece that is more than a century old, slight colour variations, small irregularities in the weave and signs of age are to be expected — they are a mark of authenticity. Please see all photos for details of the actual piece.
